,N-Female was chosen due to easy acquisition and wide standards acceptance.  The downside is that it's a rather large connector.

,The GPS setup can use any NMEA serial GPS with the USB-to-Serial adapter.  Be sure it exports GGA sentences at the least.
,Alternatively (and untested) you could use a direct USB GPS system such as the Garmin GPS18-USB and skip the USB-Serial part.
